The Hilltop House
The Hilltop House is a privately sited lodge located on the hill at the Hvammsvík estate, offering uninterrupted 360-degree panoramic views across Hvalfjörður fjord and the surrounding mountain ridges. The interior combines Nordic minimalist design with natural Icelandic materials, exposed wood, stone finishes, and large-format windows that frame the landscape as architecture. A private natural geothermal hot spring is set directly into the hillside beside the house, fed by the same geothermal water as the main Hvammsvík Hot Springs. The Farm House
The Farm House is the oldest structure on the Hvammsvík estate, the original Hvammur farmhouse, believed to date to the early settlement of the fjord. It has been fully renovated with contemporary Nordic interiors while preserving the building's original form and material character. An interior that reads as both historically grounded and design-forward. Panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and surrounding mountain ridges are visible from the main living spaces. The largest house on the estate, it sleeps up to 9 guests across 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, making it the ideal base for a private group stay or multi-family retreat in the Icelandic countryside.

The Artist Lodges
The Artist Lodges are a collection of newly built standalone cabins on the Hvammsvík estate, each designed in a contemporary Nordic style that references the material palette of the historic farm buildings nearby with dark timber cladding, clean geometric lines, and natural finishes that sit quietly in the landscape. Each lodge is individually dedicated to a specific artist from Iceland and a part of the Hvammsvík art collection. The design intent is deliberate: art, architecture, and landscape as a unified experience, rather than decoration layered onto a standard room. Each lodge accommodates 2 guests with a bedroom, kitchenette, bathroom, and sits within walking distance of the Hvammsvík Hot Springs and the estate's private shoreline. Those staying at the Artist Lodge also have access to the private hot spring exclusive to those staying on the property.

FAQ
Is Hvammsvík a good place to stay near Reykjavík?
Yes. Hvammsvík Nature Resort is about 45 minutes (56 km) from downtown Reykjavík, along a scenic coastal drive into Hvalfjörður fjord. It offers 12 private houses set on a private estate with direct access to a geothermal hot spring, making it a popular alternative to staying in the city for travelers who want nature and privacy without giving up easy access to Reykjavík.
Can I stay at Hvammsvík and still visit Reykjavík easily?
Yes. Hvammsvík is close enough to the capital for a comfortable day trip in either direction. It is recommended to have your own car to be able to drive around as there is no car rental service at Hvammsvík. Guests often use Hvammsvík as a quiet base while still driving into Reykjavík for a day of sightseeing, or as a first or last night before/after flying home via Keflavík (about 98 km away).
Is Hvammsvík accommodation good for a first night or last night in Iceland?
Yes. Its location is close to both Reykjavík and Keflavík Airport. Access to the private hot spring on arrival or departure, makes it a popular choice for guests wanting to unwind after a long flight or relax before heading home.
Is there accommodation near the Golden Circle with a private hot spring?
Yes. Hvammsvík is about a 25-minute drive from Þingvellir National Park, one of the three main Golden Circle stops, and each of its 12 private houses includes exclusive access to a private geothermal hot spring on the estate's shoreline, a combination that's uncommon directly on the Golden Circle route.
What is a good base for exploring the Golden Circle?
Many guests use Hvammsvík as a starting or ending point for a Golden Circle road trip, staying overnight in one of the private houses and driving to Þingvellir, Geysir, and Gullfoss the same day. Ending the day trip in warm geothermal hot springs at Hvammsvík.
Is Hvammsvík on the way to or from the Golden Circle?
Yes. Hvammsvík sits a short detour off the main road between Reykjavík and Þingvellir, making it easy to combine with a Golden Circle itinerary rather than requiring a separate trip.
What is a romantic or secluded accommodation option near Reykjavík?
The Hilltop House is the most secluded option, a privately sited lodge with 360-degree panoramic views over Hvalfjörður fjord and its own private geothermal hot spring set into the hillside beside the house. The Artist Lodges, each sleeping 2 guests, are the smallest and most intimate option, designed around individual Icelandic artists and set within walking distance of the shoreline. Both great options for a romantic getaway near Reykjavík.
Is Hvammsvík good for a couples' getaway or honeymoon near Reykjavík?
Yes. The private houses each have access to the private hot spring only available to guests staying at the resort. The houses are all newly renovated or completely new and are designed to reconnect with nature. Hvammsvík has the kind of setting typically associated with luxury couples' retreats, but within under an hour of Reykjavík rather than requiring a longer drive to a remote region of Iceland.Does Hvammsvík have private accommodation with its own hot tub or hot spring?
It depends on which house you are staying in. Each house on the estate includes access to a private geothermal hot spring only available to the guests staying at the resort. The Hilltop House has its own f-private hot spring set into the hillside beside the house. The Club House has a private hot tub/ jacuzzi next to the house making it the perfect house for a family getaway. These options are all separate from the public Hvammsvík Hot Springs.
What makes Hvammsvík different from a hotel for a luxury nature stay?
Rather than hotel rooms, Hvammsvík offers 12 individually designed private houses spread across a private estate — renovated historic farm buildings and newly built lodges — each with full privacy, access to a private hot spring shared only with other guests staying at the retreat and no shared walls or corridors with other guests.
Is Hvammsvík good for an anniversary or special occasion stay?
Yes. The combination of a private house located on geothermal land with hot springs around, panoramic fjord or ocean views, and Icelandic art throughout several of the houses is designed around slow, private experiences, which suits anniversaries, proposals, and honeymoons.
What types of houses are available at Hvammsvík?
Five house types: The Hilltop House (6 guests, 3 bedrooms, private hillside hot spring, most secluded), The Lake House (4 guests, 2 bedrooms, between the estate's lake and the fjord — suited to couples or small families), The Club House (7 guests, 3 bedrooms, historic farmhouse with a private hot tub and original Icelandic art), The Farm House (9 guests, 3 bedrooms, the oldest and largest building on the estate — suited to groups), and The Artist Lodges (2 guests each, standalone cabins each dedicated to an Icelandic artist) with 8 Artist Lodges available.
Which Hvammsvík house is best for couples?
The Artist Lodges and The Lake House are the two most couple-oriented options — the Artist Lodges for a compact, private cabin near the shoreline, and The Lake House for slightly more space with lake and fjord views. The Hilltop House also suits couples wanting maximum seclusion and its own private hot spring, even though it sleeps up to 6.
Which Hvammsvík house is best for a group or family?
The Farm House sleeps up to 9 guests across 3 bedrooms and is the largest house on the estate, making it the most practical option for group or multi-family stays. The Club House (7 guests) is a mid-sized alternative with a private jacuzzi.
Do all the houses have their own private hot spring or hot tub?
