  • What is the age limit at Hvammsvík Hot Springs?

    The age limit is 10 years old. Children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a guardian (18 years or older).

  • How do I get to Hvammsvík Hot Springs?

    Hvammsvík Hot Springs are only a 45 minutes drive from downtown Reykjavík. See further information on how to best get here on the How to find us page.

  • What are the opening hours?

    In winter (from August 21st till May 31st) Hvammsvik Hot Springs are open daily from 10:30am to 8:30pm (last entry at 7pm). Stormur Bistro is open from 11am to 7:30 pm.

    In summer (from June 1st till August 20th) Hvammsvik Hot Springs are open daily from 10:00am to 10:00pm (last entry at 8:30pm). Stormur Bistro is open from 12:00 to 8:30 pm.

    Restrictions may apply at certain dates and times. These are reflected in the availability of open slots on those days as seen in the booking engine.

    The accommodation is open 24/7 all year round.

  • Do I need to book tickets to Hvammsvík Hot Springs in advance?

    We strongly recommend booking in advance of your arrival to avoid wait times or disappointment. We do accept walk-in guests provided we have availability at the time. To check availability and book, please click here.

  • How long can I stay at Hvammsvík Hot Springs?

    At Hvammsvík Hot Springs we offer you to stay as long as you like after entry. Just make sure to stay hydrated! When you feel that it is time to exit the pools you can continue to enjoy the location and surroundings at our Bar & Eatery while enjoying a warm seafood soup and other refreshments.
    Please note re-entry to the Hot Springs is not permitted after check-out.

  • What happens if I arrive late?

    We cannot guarantee entry if you arrive at a time different from your booking. There is limited availability at Hvammsvík Hot Springs at each point in time, to ensure as a unique and authentic experience as possible for our guests. Tickets do however have a half-hour window of flexibility around the reserved entry time. If you foresee that you will be arriving late please give us a call at 5105900

  • Do I need to print out my e-ticket?

    There is no need for printed tickets although they can be used, you can also simply show your e-ticket on your mobile device or we can locate your booking by name.

  • What happens if I cannot complete payment when booking as I do not have customer authentication set up on my card?

    Due to new SCA regulations that took effect in the EEA in 2021 you might face an issue when making payment if you have not set up customer authentication on your card. Should you experience this issue please send us an e-mail - info@hvammsvik.com so we can assist you in making a reservation.

  • What forms of payment are accepted?

    You need to book your ticket online in advance with a credit card or a gift card code. Hvammsvik Hot Springs is a cashless location, but we accept all major cards except American Express.

  • Do you provide towels and swim shoes?

    In line with our sustainability efforts, you can rent a towel at Hvammsvík Hot Springs if needed. We also offer swim shoes for rent if you prefer to use them when navigating the different surfaces of Hvammsvík Hot Springs. As the hot springs are in a completely natural setting, there can be sharp and slippery edges on the rocks, paths and beaches. You can add a towel and/or swim shoe rental to your ticket as you book or you can add it at reception as you check-in. Guests are also welcome to bring their own.

  • Is swimwear required at Hvammsvik Hot Springs?

    Guests at Hvammsvík Hot Springs are required to wear swimwear in and around the pools at all times, including the steam room. If you forgot to pack your swimwear – don’t worry, we’ve got you covered as you can rent swimwear at our reception.

  • Are Hvammsvík Hot Springs open and accessible all year round?

    Icelandic weather is notoriously unpredictable. Hvammsvik Hot Springs generally stay open, as long as the roads that will lead you to us are open. But it does happen on occasions that The Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration closes roads due to bad weather or severe weather forecasts. Information on road closures in and around Hvammsvík can be found here.

    If we foresee closures we will do our best to contact guests with bookings on those dates and reschedule as possible.

  • Can I visit Hvammsvík Hot Springs if I do not know how to swim?

    The pools at Hvammvík Hot Springs are all shallow, with the deepest area being around 1m/3.3ft. However the area is exposed to the open ocean that varies in depth depending on the tides, and can quite unpredictably become quite deep.

    Guests that do not know how to swim should stay clear of the pools that are exposed to the open ocean and never enter the ocean! However, the Lounge Pool, Old Hot Spring, Higher Rock Pool and Higher Beach Pool should not pose any danger to non-swimmers.

    Contact the staff at the reception should you wish to borrow a flotation vest for added safety.

  • What is the temperature of the Hvammsvík Hot Spring pools?

    Hvammsvik Hot Springs has eight pools of varying temperature that are situated right by the Atlantic ocean. Water levels of some of our natural pools fluctuate with the tides and the temperatures of those pools vary greatly between high and low tide. Below is an overview of the expected temperatures of our different pools:

    Lounge Pool – 38°C/100°F
    Upper Rock Pool – 37°C/98.5°F
    Lower Rock Pool – Ocean temperature to 37°C/98.5°F depending on the tides
    Ocean Plunge Pool – Ocean temperature
    Tidal Pool – Ocean temperature to 35°C/95°F depending on the tides
    Old Hot Spring – 40°C/104°F
    Upper Beach Pool – 38°C/100°F
    Lower Beach Pool – 36°C/97°F

  • Are there rocky or dangerous areas on site?

    Hvammsvík Hot Springs are situated right on the natural shore, with some of our pools stretching into the ocean and even filling up with ocean water on high tides. There can be both sharp edges and slippery patches on the paths, beach and rocks in and around the pools.

    The ocean is cold and the hot springs can be very hot, so it is important to be careful and assess the surroundings at all times. You do enter the ocean at your own risk and care should be taken at Hvammsvik Hot Springs if not in full health.

  • I have a health condition, is it safe for me to visit Hvammsvík Hot Springs?

    The pools at Hvammsvík Hot Springs vary greatly in temperature, ranging from near cold ocean temperature to geothermal warmth. Being situated right on the natural shoreline, there can both be sharp edges and slippery patches on the beach, paths and rocks in and around the pools. Extreme care should be taken if not in full health. In case of doubt about whether your condition allows for a visit to Hvammsvík Hot Springs, always ask for your doctor’s opinion.

  • How deep are the Hvammsvík Hot Springs pools?

    The deepest area at Hvammsvík Hot Springs is around 1m/3.3ft. However the area is exposed to the open ocean that varies in depth depending on the tides, and can quite unpredictably become quite deep. Therefore utmost caution should be kept in and around the ocean at all times.

  • Is there a discount on food and drinks?

    No we do not offer any discounts on food or drinks, however, our prices have been thought out with both quality and affordability in mind.

  • Are there gender neutral changing facilities available?

    All guests are welcome at Hvammsvík Hot Springs regardless of their gender identity. At this time we have female and male gendered change rooms and shower facilities. Guests are free to choose the changing room they feel most comfortable using.

  • Is there parking for private cars at Hvammsvík Hot Springs?

    There is a free outdoor parking area reserved for guests at Hvammsvík Hot Springs. We also have three parking spaces for small coaches as well as accessible parking by the entrance. 
    All our accommodation offers private outdoor parking by the houses.

  • Can you charge EVs at Hvammsvík?

    We have two charging posts on the Hot Springs parking lot, each with two charging outlets. Type2 22kw. They are chargeable and serviced by ON Energy. Since the mobile service at the parking lot can be spotty, we highly recommend that you get a prepaid ON card rather than using the app.

  • What is your cancellation policy?

    For Hot Springs tickets cancellations for a refund are accepted up to 36 hours prior to arrival. Please note stricter terms apply to group bookings and special events. 
    For accommodation bookings, no cancellations are accepted for non-refundable bookings and flexible bookings have a cancellation window until 30 days prior to arrival.

  • Can I change my booking date and/or time?

    Yes, amendments are allowed free of charge until 24 hours prior to the booked arrival time. Within 24 hours of arrival there is a 25% amendment fee for each ticket. 

    Please note stricter terms apply to group bookings and special events.

    For accommodation bookings amendments are not allowed when booking our non-refundable rate and flexible rates are amendable until 30 days prior to arrival.

  • Can I leave and re-enter on the same day?

    No, once you check-out from the Hot Springs you cannot re-enter without buying a new ticket (availability permitting). We recommend dining when you have finished enjoying the Hot Springs or before you enter.

  • Is Hvammsvík Hot Springs near the Golden Circle?

    Yes! Hvammsvík is a short detour on the road between Reykjavík and Thingvellir National Park and has become a popular destination for both tour operators and individuals driving the Golden Circle. It's about 25 minute drive from the park's visitor centre. A perfect location to either start or end your road trip.

  • Is Hvammsvík Hot Springs near the Silver Circle

    Hvammsvík is located between both the Silver Circle and The Golden Circle. It's only a 30 minute drive to Borgarnes and other popular destinations along the Silver Circle. Many guests at the Hvammsvik Nature Resort stay there due  to the proximity to many of Iceland's most unique natural landmarks in both the southern part of the country as well as the western part of Iceland.

  • How crowded does Hvammsvik Hot Springs get?

    Hvammsvík Hot Springs are designed to offer a more peaceful experience than many larger Icelandic lagoons. The site features eight natural hot springs spread across a large shoreline area, which helps distribute guests and maintain a relaxed atmosphere. Because capacity is limited and time slots are controlled, the hot springs rarely feel overcrowded, though weekends and peak travel seasons can be busier.

  • Are there different ticket types or packages at Hvammsvík Hot Springs?

    Yes. Hvammsvík offers several ticket options that provide access to the hot springs and facilities. They offer three packages; Natural, Classic, and Comfort experiences, which vary by amenities such as private changing rooms, lockers, towels, and drinks. All ticket types include access to the eight hot springs, geothermal sauna, and the surrounding nature area.

  • How far is Hvammsvik Hot Springs from Reykjavik?

    Hvammsvík Hot Springs are located about 45 minutes from downtown Reykjavík, roughly 55–56 km (34–35 miles) by car. The drive follows a scenic coastal route into the Hvalfjörður fjord (Whalefjord), making Hvammsvík an easy and beautiful day excursion from the capital.

  • Does Hvammsvik offer transfers?

    Yes. Hvammsvík offers daily transfers to and from Reykjavik, which can be booked in advance along with your hot springs admission. Hvammsvik also offers day tours with third party tour operator. Book your transfer at https://hvammsvik.com/partner-transfers/

  • Can you visit Hvammsvík on a day trip from Reykjavík?

    Yes. Hvammsvík is only about 45 minutes from Reykjavík, making it ideal for a half-day or full-day trip from the city. Many visitors combine a visit with sightseeing around Hvalfjörður fjord or nearby natural attractions such as Gullfoss, Geysir, and Thingvellir before returning to Reykjavík the same day.

  • Is there a restaurant or café at Hvammsvík Hot Springs?

    Yes. Hvammsvík has an on-site restaurant called Stormur Bistro, which serves light Nordic dishes inspired by local Icelandic ingredients. Guests can enjoy food and drinks before or after their time in the hot springs. Please note last orders are taken 1 hour prior to the Hot Springs closing.

  • Can you swim in the ocean at Hvammsvík?

    Yes. Hvammsvík sits directly on the shoreline, and visitors can take a cold plunge in the North Atlantic Ocean between dips in the hot springs. Some pools are also influenced by the tides, creating a unique geothermal bathing experience where hot and cold water meet.

  • Can you see the Northern Lights from Hvammsvík Hot Springs?

    Yes, during winter months it is sometimes possible to see the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) from Hvammsvík. The hot springs are located outside Reykjavík in a relatively dark natural setting, which can provide good conditions for viewing the aurora when skies are clear and solar activity is strong.

  • Are discounted tickets available for children or the elderly?

    No, we apply a fair pricing structure to our tickets and everyone over the minimum age of 10 pays the same fee to enter the facilities. 

    We offer different admission types at different prices so please choose your package carefully when booking.

  • Do you have lockers available?

    Yes, the Hot Springs changing facilities offer lockers for each guest. 

    Our Natural package offers access to a locked box for valuables where guests can leave clothes and larger items on hangers. 

    Our Classic and Comfort packages offer access to a personal locker where you can keep all your belongings safe during your visit.

  • What should I bring to Hvammsvík Hot Springs?

    For a visit to the Hot Springs we recommend bringing swimwear and a towel although both can be rented on site if needed.

    If you're staying with us overnight we recommend bringing a swimsuit and the personal items you prefer.

    We aim to offer all the necessary facilities and amenities guests might need during a visit. 

  • Do you have a steam room or sauna?

    Yes, we have both a steam room and a sauna overlooking the fjord at Hvammsvík Hot Springs. 

  • What is your policy on alcohol consumption?

    The legal drinking age in Iceland is 20 years and no guests under the age of 20 are served alcohol. Proof of age might be required by staff.

    Whilst there is no set limit on the number of alcoholic drinks we serve each guest we ask guests to drink responsibly and reserve the right to refuse service to anyone we feel is excessively intoxicated.

  • Do you have a noise or behavior policy?

    Yes, all guests are required to read and accept our terms & conditions and safety standards when booking. 

    We request our guests are respectful at all times of other guests, our staff and the nature. We reserve the right to refuse admission to guests or ask guests to leave the premises at any time. 

    We operate a zero-tolerance policy towards verbal and physical abuse and respectfully ask guests to avoid making excessive noise.

    Any form of physical intimacy is not tolerated.

  • Can I bring my own food and/or drinks?

    If you are visiting our Hot Springs we do not allow any food or drinks to be brought onto the premises. We sell both food and drinks on site. 

    If you are staying in our accommodation you are more than welcome to bring any food and drinks to the house you need during your stay.

  • Do you accept group bookings?

    Yes, although we have a restriction on the number of guests we admit at any given time we do accept group bookings. For groups of less than 10 guests please make bookings on our website. 

    For groups of 10 guests or more please use our contact form to obtain a quote.

  • Do you offer private rentals or exclusive hire bookings?

    Yes, this can be arranged directly with our team by filling in this form. Please note pricing differs greatly on date and time of visit and the best prices are available for private hires outside normal opening hours.

  • How does Hvammsvík Hot Springs differ from the Blue Lagoon?

    Hvammsvík Hot Springs offers a variety of pools of different temperatures on a black sand beach by the Atlantic Ocean. You will enjoy fantastic views of the surrounding fjord and mountains as well as experience the local wildlife. We limit the number of bookings at any given time to maintain privacy and offer a relaxing experience at a fair price.

    The Blue Lagoon is one large pool offering much larger facilities and admitting a much higher number of guests simultaneously whilst charging a significantly higher entrance fee.

  • Do I need to shower before entering the pools?

    Yes, all guests are required to shower and wash naked before entering the pools. 
    Our geothermal pools are natural and rely solely on water circulation and renewal as they do not contain any chemicals for cleanliness of the water. We supply our own brand of shampoo, body wash and conditioner in all showers. 
    Our Natural changing rooms only have open showers available. For privacy we recommend booking the Classic or Comfort admission where you will find private shower booths in the changing rooms.

  • Is it a crowded lagoon?

    Hvammsvík Hot Springs is one of the less crowded geothermal spa experiences near Reykjavík. Visitor numbers are carefully managed, allowing guests to enjoy eight geothermal hot springs, ocean views, and the surrounding nature without the large crowds often found at Iceland's busiest lagoons.

  • Are phones, recording glasses or other recording equipment allowed at Hvammsvík?

    It is allowed to use mobile phones and cameras in Hvammsvík, however the usage of such equipment is strongly prohibited in the changing rooms. Recording glasses such as Meta glasses are not allowed anywhere in Hvammsvík due to the difficulty for other guests and staff to realize whether they are being recorded or not.

  • Can I book for multiple people with the 10-visit pass?

    The 10-visit pass covers you and one guest, once a day. Each person uses one visit, so bringing a guest every time gives you 5 visits in total.

    All our overnight guests have access to the games room at The Barn 24/7. Please note the room might occasionally be closed for private events. 
    Hot Springs guests do not have access to the games room.

  • How do I access the property through the gates?

    Our main gates are open during the opening hours of the Hot Springs. If you arrive early, the gates open 15 minutes prior to the facilities opening. 

    If you have a booking for the Nature Resort the access information will be shared with you between 1 and 3 days prior to arrival. 

    If you are leaving after the gates have closed, please drive up close to the gates and they will open.

  • Can I bring my own food and/or drinks?

    If you are staying in our accommodation you are more than welcome to bring any food and drinks to the house you need during your stay.

  • Do you have a meeting or conference space?

    Yes, we have one meeting room at The Barn which can seat up to 40 guests and is suitable for meals, meetings, presentations and more functions. The room is equipped with a bar, a portable TV, a small kitchen and toilets. 

    We can make arrangements for larger groups in collaboration with our catering partners.

    Additionally we have The Temple by The Barn which is the perfect outdoor venue for weddings and social gatherings.

  • What are the check-in and -out times?

    If you are staying in our accommodation we offer check-in from 4:00pm and check-out until 11:00am.

  • Do you have WiFi and mobile coverage on the property?

    Yes, all our buildings offer free high speed WiFi. 

    Mobile coverage is decent although this can depend on your provider and the exact location on the property. 

  • Is camping allowed?

    No, we do not offer any camping facilities on site. All Hot Springs visitors must leave the premises post visit.
