Driving to Hvammsvík from Reykjavik

Driving to Hvammsvík from Reykjavik
The most straightforward way to reach Hvammsvik Hot Springs and Nature Resort from Reykjavik is taking Route 1 (our Ring-road that can take you around the whole island). After passing through the town of Mosfellsbær, you soon get to the roots of Esjan. This mountain is a favorite of the residents of Reykjavík since they look at it from afar every day.
Esjan
If you’re feeling up for a hike, Esjan is a great choice. There is a big parking lot and lots of information to be found on signs before your journey up the mountain. There are different paths you can take, each with its own difficulty level. Many people consider the Mógilsá River up to the Þverfellshorn summit the best one. Make sure to bring good shoes, layers of clothing and an empty water bottle. You’ll fill it up in one of the crystal clear streams on the way.
After a rejuvenating hike, it’s time to visit Whale Fjord.Keep driving north and turn onto Route 47, Hvalfjarðarvegur (Road of Whale Fjord). This turn comes right before the tunnel so if you reach the tunnel, you have gone too far.
Whale Fjord
While the roundabouts of Mosfellsbær are usually quite busy, as soon as you make the turn onto Route 47, you feel yourself getting further from the crowds. The main reason is the tunnel of Whale Fjord, Hvalfjarðargöng, which takes travellers straight to the other side of the fjord. Thus, most people skip driving the scenic Route 47.
This place is filled with serenity. The views are stunning and there are some interesting sights along the way. The main attraction in Whale Fjord is arguably Hvammsvik Hot Springs and Nature Resort. This beautiful place is a must-visit for anyone travelling north from Reykjavik.
Hvammsvík
Being one of the earliest settlements of Icelands and a US army base in WWII, Hvammsvík is filled with history. Its surroundings are stunning; black sand beaches, majestic mountains and thousands of birds.
Guests can enjoy this historic place, blessed with geothermal heat and amazing views, in 8 different hot springs. There is a swim-up bar, a steambath, and of course, the ocean itself. After a soak, the legendary seafood soup awaits at their restaurant, Stormur Bistro, along with other light dishes. Make sure to book beforehand to secure a spot in the hot springs!
Not enough Whale Fjord?
It is likely that you haven’t gotten enough of this unique fjord. After a visit to Hvammsvík, why not keep driving? The waterfall at Fossá is a great stop, as well as The War and Peace Museum at Miðsandur farm. There you can learn all about the Allied Forces’ presence in Whale Fjord during WWII.
If going back to Reykjavík you can take the tunnel on your way back. After this day-trip you will feel rejuvenated after being out in nature, learning about the history of Whale Fjord and eating great Nordic food. It’s not unlikely that you will see plenty of birds, sheep and even seals or whales.
