The Temple

The Temple is an outdoor sculpture open to interpretation. It is a sacred and inclusive space that welcomes everyone, regardless of religion or beliefs. Designed and conceived by Skúli Mogensen.

From Viking Settlement to New Development

Hvammsvík is one of Iceland's earliest Viking settlement farms. There was a temple, or hof, at Hvammsvík, followed later by a Christian church. This transformation, from heathen traditions to Christianity, and the way sacred structures around the world have shifted roles throughout history, inspired the creation of the Temple at Hvammsvík. The Temple measures roughly 18 meters long and 14 meters wide. Built from exposed architectural concrete, it is open to the elements. The roof “floats” above the structure in the shape of a Maltese Cross, while the floor echoes the Celtic Cross with a central circle that can serve as a fire pit in line with pagan tradition. The design blends seamlessly with the surrounding landscape, casting dramatic shadows as sunlight enters from openings aligned to the cardinal directions.

A Sacred Space

The Temple was designed and completed by Skúli Mogensen on August 16, 2025, for his and Gríma Björg Thorarensen wedding. On that day, Guðrún Karls Helgudóttir, Bishop of Iceland, blessed the Temple and consecrated its function as a church for the ceremony.

For your wedding, the Temple can serve as the place where you exchange your vows. After the ceremony, it can be seamlessly transformed into a unique dining space, with seating for up to 150 guests.
